Sometimes what needs saying is better said as a poem than as a report. This text has been shared within our community, in English and in the original Catalan, and speaks to a question that runs through everything we do: what kind of ecosystem-modifiers do we want to be?
Destiny
The words of the oracle resound: the future is arid and lifeless, the earth will crack, and the cicadas will sing from March until November. The springs will cease to flow throughout the year, and the sea will become broth.
We are the chosen people: those of us breathing at this precise moment, those writing these words, and those reading them. We are the ones who decide, the ones who hold the course of destiny in our hands.
There is evidence that large areas of the Amazon were profoundly shaped by human communities over thousands of years. Before then, many of these places were hotter, more arid landscapes, similar to what we now know as savannah — difficult places in which both our species and many others could thrive. It was those humans who realised that, with their own hands, they could shape the land and turn it into an oasis.
At first, they probably did so to ensure their own survival and that of their descendants. Later, they saw that, step by step and seed by seed, they were creating a richer, more diverse, cooler and more humid environment, one that could attract and sustain different trees and animals. They no longer had to travel immense distances to hunt and find food. They came to understand the role of human beings, of Homo sapiens: we are modifiers of ecosystems. These practices and this wisdom were passed down and refined from generation to generation, until they created the most biodiverse system in the world — the lungs of the planet.
We are also capable of modifying the ecosystems in which we live, or rather, those that surround us, in the opposite direction. Apart from the Amazon and a few other isolated examples, we have shown ourselves to be deserving of the destiny foretold by the oracle.
Human beings have developed a complex language and intellect, through which we can communicate ideas and abstract concepts. We can use them to perpetuate a violent and competitive system, a mindset of scarcity, the doctrine of fear and, consequently, hatred of the “other” — or we can use them to pass on tools and knowledge that allow us to stop merely exploiting and degrading the earth. Tools that let us produce while serving other species, leaving the ground beneath our feet richer and more fertile than it was before we stepped upon it.
We must weave a society willing to look at itself in the mirror and see, on the other side, the same reflection that the first person saw in the stream formed within the ecosystem they had enriched: modifiers of ecosystems.
The rudder swings violently from side to side as we drift without direction. Take hold of it, and turn. Change course, now.
We, as human beings, are modifiers of ecosystems by definition. We have two choices. The first is the easiest, and requires less effort, both physical and mental. The second is the more creative choice: the one that enriches and diversifies our surroundings.
We are capable of creating genuine oases of biodiversity within the desert of mediocrity and capitalist erosion. By building community networks, sustained by dreamers, we can alter the destiny of our bioregion.
For many, the arid and lifeless destiny of our land is an inexorable process that they merely observe, passively. But it is those fearless souls who dare to act who are the chosen people — the ones who will change the course of destiny.
