About ABOCA verds

Associació pels boscos i camps verds — working for resilient territories, regenerative ecosystems and living landscapes in Deià, Mallorca.

Who we are

ABOCA verds was founded to work towards the restoration of the relationships that make life possible — between people, animals, plants, soil, water and territory.

Based in Deià, Mallorca, we work at the intersection of ecological restoration, agroecology, biodiversity, education and culture. Our approach is rooted in the territory we live in and shaped by collaboration with local communities, organisations, researchers, artists and practitioners.

Our work has developed through practical projects and collective experimentation. We work with the land directly: restoring habitats, growing food, managing vegetation through rotational grazing, caring for soils and water, and creating spaces for people to learn and work together.

In 2024, ABOCA verds co-initiated Regenera Deià, a collaborative project bringing together ecological restoration, community gardens, grazing, biodiversity and education. ABOCA verds coordinates and develops several of the project’s practices, exploring how local action can contribute to more resilient landscapes and communities.

Alongside this practical work, we are beginning an Artistic Research Lab exploring how artistic and participatory practices can help us imagine and experience different relationships with ecology, territory, care and collective life.

We do not see ecological restoration as a technical task alone. It is also a cultural and social process: rebuilding knowledge, relationships and the capacity to care for the places on which we depend.

ABOCA verds is an ongoing practice. We learn by doing, adapt to the territory and share what we learn with others.

Working areas

ABOCA verds works across four interconnected areas. They provide a framework for our activities while allowing different projects, collaborations and forms of experimentation to emerge and evolve.

Ecology & Territory

We work towards the restoration and regeneration of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Our activities include regenerative landscape management, agroecology, biodiversity conservation, habitat connectivity, rotational grazing practices, fire prevention and marine stewardship.

Community & Education

We create opportunities for people to reconnect with the territories they inhabit through shared activities, practical learning and collective experiences. Community gardens, environmental education, workshops and participatory processes are some of the ways in which we bring people together around the care of their surroundings.

Culture & Research

We explore the relationships between ecology, culture and society through artistic practices, interdisciplinary research and creative experimentation. Through initiatives such as our Living Lab for Pluriversal Future Imaginations and Nature-Culture Weaving, we create spaces to question established ways of thinking and explore other possibilities of living together.

Coordination & Development

We develop, connect and coordinate projects, partnerships and resources that support our work. This includes strategic development, project management, funding, administration, communication and the cultivation of long-term collaborations.

These areas are not separate departments but interconnected dimensions of our work. Projects often move between them, bringing together different people, knowledge and practices.

Governance

ABOCA verds is organised as a non-profit association with a hybrid model of governance and operational coordination.

We combine collective responsibility and democratic participation with professional project development and implementation.

General Assembly

The General Assembly brings together the members of the association and constitutes its highest decision-making body. It defines the general direction of the organisation, elects the Board of Directors and decides on fundamental institutional matters.

Board of Directors · Junta Directiva

The Board of Directors is responsible for the institutional governance and oversight of the association. It safeguards the organisation's mission, accompanies its strategic development and ensures accountability, transparency and responsible management.

Executive Direction

The Executive Direction is responsible for the operational development and coordination of ABOCA verds. It initiates and connects projects, develops partnerships, coordinates resources and supports the implementation of the association's objectives.

Working Areas & Collaborations

Our activities are developed through interconnected working areas and collaborations. Members, project collaborators, researchers, artists, practitioners and local organisations contribute their knowledge and experience to different initiatives.

Through ABOCA verds, I want to explore what ecosocial transformation can look like in practice. Bringing together critical research, community knowledge, and creative practices, I'm interested in how we can reclaim our relationship with the territory, challenge dominant economic imaginaries, and build alternatives rooted in care, cooperation, and ecological limits.

Bio

Jule works at the intersections of degrowth, feminist political ecology, and community-led regeneration. Her work explores alternatives to growth-driven economic systems, collective forms of organising, and the relationships between social justice, care, and (ecological) wellbeing. She is interested in translating critical thought into creative and situated practices of ecosocial transformation.

Coming from an educational background, I'm interested in connecting the bigger questions of ecological and social transformation with practical change on the ground. ABOCA verds offers a space to learn from the territory, experiment with different approaches to agriculture, forestry, and ecosystem regeneration, and explore alternative ways of organising our relationship with land and economy.

I believe in learning by doing, sharing knowledge, and understanding what works in a particular place — not to copy solutions blindly, but to identify the principles and practices that might inspire change elsewhere.

Bio

Àngel comes from an educational background and is committed to turning ecological and social transformation into practical action. He explores the intersections of agroecology, forest and ecosystem regeneration, and alternative economic thinking, bringing together traditional knowledge and new approaches to reconnect people with their territories and build more resilient ways of living.

ABOCA verds represents a return to the land of our ancestors, restoring its lost dignity and reclaiming the meaning that has faded through generations. It brings together the tools and knowledge of the present to work towards a future of constant change, where people and the natural environment are once again at the heart of a collective and profoundly hopeful endeavour.

Bio

With a lifelong commitment to education, he has worked in teaching, directing and mediating between institutions, always seeking ways to bring people together and open up new possibilities. Deeply rooted in this place, he has a profound connection to its territory and, especially, to the sea, which has shaped his understanding of the relationship between people and their environment. His work with gentle exercise and relaxation techniques reflects an interest in movement and wellbeing, while his belief in meaningful change is grounded in leading by example and putting new ideas into practice at the local level.

ABOCA verds has created space for the community to experience the joy that comes from generating for, rather than extracting from, a collective system!

As a collective we will demonstrate just how much real value the land will return when we share in both the efforts and the rewards of caring for it.

Look at all that we have! We have so much! Here, have some! Here, help me create some!

Bio

Anne is on a mission to democratize energy and harness our abundant natural resources to help people, communities, and the earth thrive.

Why we’re participating

My family is new to Deia, and we’re looking for ways to connect with our new community, and better understand and contribute to this beautiful place.

ABOCA verds is building a sense of collective responsibility and creating space for everyone to learn and build together

Strange Manifesto

Privitization skews our perception of value. It reduces the world’s abundant resources - materials, land, energy, water, food - into numbers on a spreadsheet. Numbers that grow while the real value that those same resources provide to the communities in which they sit, shrinks.

This creates a false sense of scarcity. A scarcity which causes us to turn inwards and share less, and erodes our sense of responsibility to care for things beyond our isolated existence.

And now we’re at a turning point. From here, we could scramble to collect the remaining scraps for our own kin, and cede the decision making to a private few.

Or we could see what we’re still capable of. How many new doors can we open? What can we grow? What can we harness? Would my neighbor be willing to help?

ABOCA verds is a living example of the second reality. As a collective we will demonstrate just how much real value the land will return when we share in both the efforts and the rewards of caring for it, and the joy that comes from generating for instead of extracting from a collective system.

I believe artistic and cultural practices can play an important role in ecosocial transformation. They can help us question the systems we live in, create connections between people, and make space for alternative ways of imagining and organising our collective lives.

I'm interested in the potential of collective creation: in what happens when we bring different skills, experiences, and perspectives together, and turn shared concerns into shared practices.

ABOCA verds is an opportunity to explore these possibilities through a living, place-based project.

Bio

Tobias is a musician and artist interested in the intersections of cultural practice, political imagination, and ecosocial transformation. His work explores the potential of collective creativity and the role of art and music bringing people together, questioning/dominant systems, and opening up possibilities for more collaborative ways of living.

Community Engagement & Local Networks

In a world where the wealthiest 1% of the population produce more carbon emissions than the poorest half of humanity, and where wars and injustices seem never-ending, finding a project like ABOCA verds feels like finding a glimmer of hope when you've almost lost faith in the possibility of building a better world.

I don't see it as a bubble, detached from reality, but rather as an oasis — a place to build community, create alternatives and stand together against an extractivist system that is exhausting the planet. Because real change has always started from the grassroots: from small communities coming together, organising, building connections and choosing to live differently. Communities that believe another way of life is not only possible, but worth fighting for.

Community Engagement & Local Networks

In a system where endless growth and exploitation are proving to reap ever more worrying results, it’s time to look to the basics, the essentials of care and respect of our surroundings, how to live with rather than just from natural resources, to see society as a whole and people as individuals as part of a larger living organic system. The conscience exists but needs that impulse to activate its potential…

A new and exciting project that brings community and nature together, to understand the environment as more than a source of resources to exploit. Promoting a circular, local economy to rethink the current, failed system.
