FAQ

Questions & answers

Who we are, why we exist, and what we mean by “regeneration”.

Who is ABOCA verds?

ABOCA verds is a community-based association working for ecological restoration, agroecology, biodiversity and collective care.

The association brings together people with different backgrounds and practices — from land workers, growers and educators to artists, researchers, neighbours and community organisers.

ABOCA verds initiates and coordinates projects that explore practical ways of restoring ecosystems and strengthening relationships between people and their territories. This includes Regenera Deià, community gardens, rotational grazing and our emerging artistic research work.

We work collaboratively with local organisations, institutions and individuals, connecting ecological practice, education, culture and community.

Why was ABOCA verds created?

We are facing a climate and ecological emergency in which our dominant ways of producing, consuming and managing land are profoundly contributing to ecological degradation, biodiversity loss and the depletion of natural resources.

While many systems are presented as capable of becoming sustainable through technological or incremental change, ABOCA verds believes that deeper transformation is needed.

We need to move away from systems based on extraction, endless growth and separation from the living world, and towards ways of living that are regenerative, local, diverse and grounded in care.

ABOCA verds was created to explore and put these alternatives into practice — through ecological restoration, agroecology, community, education and culture.

Isn’t ‘regeneration’ just another form of greenwashing?

Regeneration can easily become another label if it is used to make extractive systems appear more sustainable without changing how they operate.

For ABOCA verds, regeneration means more than reducing harm or making existing systems more efficient. It means restoring ecosystems, rebuilding relationships and changing the ways we produce, consume and care for land.

We use the term to describe a shift away from extraction, depletion and endless growth towards systems that restore soil, water, biodiversity and community resilience.

Regeneration is not about making business as usual greener. It is about creating different ways of living and working with the living world.

Does regeneration mean going back to the past?

Regeneration does not mean returning to a romanticised past or rejecting change, innovation or modern life.

It means learning from ecological processes, local knowledge and practices that have sustained communities and landscapes, while adapting them to the realities we face today.

ABOCA verds supports a diversity of ways of caring for and living with the land, shaped by their places and communities.

We are interested in what can emerge when ecological knowledge, contemporary research, creativity and local practice come together.

Regeneration is not about going backwards. It is about creating conditions for diverse forms of life to thrive into the future.
